WORKS IN SERIES: SEX 3.0
A thought-provoking look at the future of sex
Sex is changing. In cities across Europe, silicon doll brothels open in secret locations. Demand soars for new kinds of straight male sex toys. AI is here. This photography project will document the unprecedented demand for these new devices. It will ask whether the rising demand comes from novelty or signals the new normal.
More importantly, it will explore why this is happening.
Dortmund, Barcelona, Turin, Paris, Vienna, Arhus: In the last year, sex doll brothels have opened across Europe. All dolls look female and are made from silicon to imitate human skin. In appearance, however, they vary: some look disarmingly human, while others look unnaturally out of proportion. The brothels themselves have private rooms for each doll.
So far, the brothels have been almost exclusively for the straight male market. Some have cause sparked controversy in their home cities. All, nonetheless, continue to be booked out for weeks in advance.
Male sex toys
The demand for straight males sex toys is one of the fastest growing markets in the world. Most of the products are discreet: some could pass for bedside lamps or pieces of furniture, others are deliberately disguised as everyday objects, such as beer cans or egg cartons.
Meanwhile, the ubiquitousness of smartphones could reinvent virtual sex. VR apps for porn and sex toys are becoming increasingly popular.
A robotics company hopes to produce a sex doll with advanced AI. The ‘first generation’ is a robotic head on a silicon body and is due for imminent release. The second will be a body that is fully robotic. Regularly, the London-based Chinese company releases videos of the robots via blog, as though the construction process is part of the attraction.
The images will be the first to cover the story in a way that is sensitive to the subject; moving beyond ‘clickbait’ and sensationalism. Altogether, the project aims to document the changes as they happen. It will explore what the new devices – and their dramatic popularity - can tell us about intimacy and the future of human relationships.
